Paradox was bred by Messrs Graham at the Yardley Stud, and was bought at their yearling sale by Captain Bowlins for 700 guineas. Oa reaching two years of age he showed so much the promise that the Duka of Westminster gare large sum of 6000 guineas for him, with a contingency of 2000 guineas more should he win- the Middle Park Plate. That race marked his first appearance in public, and he started a warm favourite in a field, of 13, but was beaten by both Melton and Xaintrailles, running a dead heat witb Royal Hampton for third place. The Duke 'of Westminster then in a fit of disgust sold the colt to Mr Gloete, for whom he two or three weeks later won the Dawhurst Plate, of 1557 aovs, beating Cora, Xaintrailles, and seven others, including Farewell. After tbia victory, which closed the two-year-old career of Paradox, -Mr Gloete was offered 10,000 guineas for tbe colt, but declined it. He is engaged in the Derby, Epsom Grand Prize, Grand Prix de Paris, Champion Stakes, and other valuable Stakes, but is not entered for the St, Leger. At the time the last mail left Home Paradox waß first favourite for the Two Thousand at 3 to 1, " taken and wanted," with Child of the Mist second at Bto 1, For the Derby Paradox and Melton (who was not engaged in the Guineas) were equal favourites at 7 to 1, while the Chopette colt was quoted at 100 to 1.
